Gifted and Talented
Curriculum Compacting
1. Assess what a student knows and still needs to master.
2. Plan time needed to be spent on enriched or accelerated learning.
3. Retest to check for understanding.
4. Provide challenging assignments or activities to be used in freed up time.
Tiered Assignments
Are used when there are a variety of skills levels within one class. the assignments are varied in complexity, depth and abstractness with some scaffolding, and or additional supports. Tiered assignments are motivating for students as they cater to the specific level of readiness that the student possesses. In creating a tiered assignment, consider:
- focusing on a key concept
- using many resources
- adjusting the assignment by complexity, number of steps, and concreteness.
- ensure clear criteria.
Alternate Choice Assignments
There is more than one way to achieve a desired outcome. Allow your gifted and talented students more freedom in completion of the end product. For example students can complete websites, interviews, videos or PowerPoint instead of a worksheet.
Enrichment Clusters
Area where several students can meet to further explore specific ideas or topics. Enrichment clusters are not considered mini-courses and do not need lesson plans or learning outcomes. A sample topic may be provided and it is up to the cluster to further their knowledge of the topic by any means they see fit.
Acceleration
Advancement of a student at a much quicker pace than the rest of the class. Acceleration strategies include:
-Whole-grade acceleration
-Subject acceleration
-Curriculum compacting
-Distance Learning
-Challenge for credit (in high school)
Enrichment Teaching and Learning
Using Higher Order Questions
Have specific questions set aside for students displaying a higher level of readiness.
Independent Study and Research Studies
Students can be given the opportunity to further research a topic or unit from class. In my grade 7 science class I gave all students the opportunity to complete a bonus presentation on a topic of their choosing that related to the unit. I thought this was a great way for students to explore a topic that really peaked their interest.
